A Year in Pinoy Cinema

A Year in Pinoy Cinema

Year 2014 is an improvement in Pinoy Cinema. At least some filmmakers try to break the template trapping the mainstream cinema. It’s also a year where some books adopt into a film. Wattpad stories proved to be a financial success when it comes to box office and television.

CULT FILM OF THE YEAR
“That Thing Called Tadhana” (Cinema One Originals to be release by Star Cinema February 2015)
Director: Antoinette Jadaone
Why: I’ve never seen this film but I want to see it... ASAP!!!! I heard that there fans who already watched this quoting their favorite line/s from the film in the internet. There are also positive feedbacks about this film. I just have to wait for this by February 2015. Star Cinema will finally releasing this commercially.
Prediction: It will top the box office by February. This film will be on top of THE HIGHEST CROSSING INDIE FILM OF ALL TIME.

MOVIE THAT TRIES TO BE UNIQUE
“Echoserang Frog” (Scenema Concepts International)
Director: Joven Tan
Cast: Shalala
Why: Shalala’s first starring film is both worst and best. It is worst because of some technical problems and bad acting. Best because it tries to be different from all mainstream film. It tries to be Borat or Bruno. It satirizes the making and staring in a film. There are scenes that I funny. There are some, corny. But overall, it’s entertaining.

THE TOP FIVE BEST PINOY FILMS I’VE SEEN IN 2014.

5. The Gifted (Viva Films)
    Director: Chris Martinez
Why: Imagine Anne Curtis being fat. Wow! She’s still beautiful. The twist in the end credits is the one I like most. I still can’t forget it. It sticks to my mind after seeing this film. It’s funny.

4. Beauty in a Bottle  (Star Cinema, Quantum Films)
       Director: Antoinette Jadaone
Why:  A satire film about being beautiful in modern day. I love the episode of Angelica
Panganiban, it’s cute.

      Director: Cathy Garcia-Molina
Why: Honestly, I still never the book but this film is the best adaptation of a wattpad story so far. The scene near Mayon Volcano is majestic.

2. T’yanak (FDCP)
     Directors: Peque Gallaga, Lore Reyes
Why: The original is a much love classic this one is the great remake. It never failed me. It’s more on emotions than horror.  I got surprise in the hospital scene.  Judy Ann Santos deserves a best actress trophy for her role she really is the center of the film.

1. Relaks, It's Just Pag-ibig (Spring Films, Star Cinema)
Director: Irene Villamor & Antoinette Jadaone
Why: This film is my favorite film of 2014. It reminds me about my teen days, about first love. It reminds me that love is around us. Cupcake, although she’s the villain is my favorite character. Inigo Pascual is the most promising lead along with Sofia Andres.

Best Director of the Year: Antoinette Jadaone forRelaks, It's Just Pag-ibig”
Best Actress: Judy Ann Santos for T’yanak”
Best Actor: Sid Lucero for T’yanak”
Best Supporting Actress: Solenn Heussaff for “T’yanak”  tie with
Ericka Villongco –for Relaks, It's Just Pag-ibig”
Best Supporting Actor: Vandolf for “ ABNKKBSNPLAko: The Movie”

THE TOP FIVE WORST FILMS I’VE SEEN IN 2014

5. Dilim (Regal Films)
    Director: Jose Javier Reyes
Why: It feels like its rush for Halloween consumption.  It’s confused weather it’s a horror or a drama. But overall it’s boring as hell.

    Director: Laurice Guillen
Why: I read the book. The movie adaptation fails me. The book is better than the film. Better not one of those infidelity films. Watch out, Eric Gonzales English is bad.

      Director: Andoy Ranay
Why: The worst of all infidelity films that’s common in our mainstream cinema.

     Director: Wenn V. Deramas
Why: This sequel to the already worst Moron 5 is corny.

    Director: Andoy Ranay
Why: Again honestly I still did not read the book. If “She’s Dating the Gangster” the best wattpad story adaption, this one is the worst. It invests on a Nadine LustreJames Reid love team. It feels rush to theater. I am hoping for a better sequel.

Worst Director of the Year: Andoy Ranay for “Trophy Wife”, “Talk Back and You're Dead”,
                                                and “Diary ng Panget
Worst Actress:  Erich Gonzales for “Once a Princess
Worst Actor: Zanjoe Marudo for “My Illegal Wife
Worst Supporting Actress: Ruffa Gutierrez for “Maybe This Time
Worst Supporting Actor:  RJ Padilla for “Sa Ngalan ng Ama, Ina, at mga Anak
