Aswang (2011 – Regal Films)

Jerrold Tarog’s Aswang a remake of the classic Gallaga/Reyes film is way different from each other. The Gallaga/Reyes version is iconic and terrifying that even to this generation; it’s still managed to scare. Tarog’s version is way worst than the original. It has excess when it comes to storytelling. It did not know where to focus. Either to a town invaded by Abwaks, to a family of Abwaks(yes abwaks instead of aswang!), to a sibling trying to hide from a killer or to a man on his vengeance for killing his father. It can’t even justify its ending. The ending feels like there might be a sequel or it’s just obligated for its running time. There are some scenes that I find laughable. Bembol Rocco is laughable every time he is on the screen. Some gore can’t even help this film. Lovi Poe is perfect for the role of aswang but why she’s not a villain? It’s a waste of time watching this remake. 

REMARKS: The worst remake to the iconic classic horror film.

She’s Dating the Gangster (2014 – Star Cinema)

Like Diary ng Panget, I did not read the novel; She’s Dating the Gangster which I heard begins as an e-book on wattpad.com so I am not familiar with the whole source material. I am just going put my basis on a movie adaptation.  It’s a second movie adaptation from the on-line e-book. And it is better than Diary ng Panget. The movie has two different timeline, one is from the present (Kenneth and Kalay) and the second is from the past (Kenjie and Athena). Both timeline is played by Daniel Padilla and Katherine Bernard. The movie focuses on the Kenjie and Athena story rather than Kenneth and Kelay so I don’t like the obligatory happy ending in the present timeline. But as a whole, I forgive this film. First for the superb acting among the cast, the cinematography (the scene in the past near Mt. Mayon is breathtaking) and the best direction from Cathy Garcia – Molina. And second, for reuniting the iconic loveteam of the 90’s, Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta.

REMARKS: The first best adaptation from wattpad.

Rosario (2011 - Cinemabuhay International and Studio 5)

Rosario is a based on a true story by Manuel V. Pangilinan’s grandmother. It is one of the entries in 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival. It is maybe the last movie of the great Dolphy. It’s a period film. I have nothing to say about the customs, the music and the direction.  They are artily at best. Also the whole cast, special mention Jennylyn Mercado who’s perfect for the role of Rosario. Her last scene with with Sid Lucero is without any dialog and just facial expression is touching and unforgettable. It’s just a single moment and I was moved by that scene. It’s one the best moment in Pinoy cinema.  But one of my best complain about this film is that, it’s suppose to be an erotic film with artistic sex scenes or artily skin exposure. It needs to be a rated R film and not a PG-13 movie. Watching this film feels like I am watching a sanitized or censored erotic movie. But then it’s easily forgiven. 

REMARKS: It has one of the greatest single moments in Pinoy Cinema.

Diary ng Panget (2014 – Viva Films)

I never read the the book, Diary ng Panget (which I heard is based on an on-line book, wattpad.com) so I am putting my basis only on a movie adaptation. The movie is so familiar that from the start, you know how it would end. It’s the same rom-com movie I watched; it’s the same Cinederella movie adaptation I’ve seen in so many years. What makes this film works is from the great chemistry from the two lead. Nadine Lustre and James Reid are perfect for their first role but they fall so flat in their acting. They lack energy especially when it needs to deliver comical lines. Even the two supporting roles (Yassi Pressman and Andre Paras) did not help. It’s the first movie adaptation from wattpad, it’s great that big studio finally have an interest for new source material now a days. But the movie itself though I am not familiar with the source is disappointing at best!  

REMARKS: It’s not worst, it’s just disappointing.

DoReMi (1995-Neo Films)

DoReMi is the much beloved heartwarming tale of friendship lost and found. It’s one of the greatest films of the 90’s or I should say, THE GREATEST PINOY FILMS OF ALL TIME. The film has a big heart on its own. There are many parts in this film that I like. It has a one of most memorable theme song in Pinoy Cinema, “I Can” as sung by the three characters. There may be technical failures in the film like the sound but it’s all forgiven. The final scene which the three characters finally seen each other after a year and they sing, “I Can” is so memorable and is worth a tear drop. There’s nothing to complain about three lead, Donna Cruz, Regine Velasquez and Mike Cojuanco they are more comfortable about they’re characters. 

REMARKS: It’s worth a watching. Please watch with your friend or barkadas.

Mga Babae sa VIP Rooms (2003 – Mabuhay Cinema Production)

Mga Babae sa VIP Rooms is another film from the era of Fly-by-Night-Studios. Just like many films of that era, this film has nothing but to show some skin and boobs. It’s one of the Best-Worst Pinoy Films of all time in the vein of Plan 9 from Outer space.  Trust me; it’s worth a look and it’s worth a fun time. It’s worth a cult fan either and I am one of those. It has poorly stage scenes, poor camera angles, blank affect characters, badly delivered lines, corny comedic scenes, badly written script and brilliantly awful sex scenes.

REMARKS: Mga Babae sa VIP Rooms is Plan 9 from Outer space meets Showgirls!

One Night Only (2008 – Canary Films and Octoart Films)

One Night Only is an entry to the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival which is held every December each years.  Some may complain about its decent story in which it has no end and no beginning and with too many characters ended up in the same hotel, Lover’s Hideaway. But if you dig into its decency, it’s more like a puzzle. It’s something rare and different genre. The characters are connected to each other, why and how they are connected then you must watch this film with open mind. Director Jose Javier Reyes expertly crafted this brilliant and I should consider as one of the greatest modern Pinoy film. I have nothing to say about the whole cast for they are at best. Alessandra de Rose is the most memorable character among them as a pa-inosenting virgin. 

REMARKS: It’s a great mind ride movie until the end and you’ll never regret it.

Here Comes the Bride (2010-Star Cinema and Quantum Films)

Here Comes the Bride is the most hilarious and brilliant body switching comedy I’ve seen in our shore. For me I consider this film as one of the greatest Pinoy films of all time.  It’s always fresh even if you watch it for a couple of times. It’s always a great ride even if you know how it would end up. It’s about gay image stylish, a virgin bride, a sick grandfather, a poor yaya and an old maid ninang each switch their body thru solar eclipse by a car accident in Magnetic Hill. Each of them had given a second chance in life. All of the characters are worth loving. All of them did their part perfectly. Angelica Panganiban is the one who stand among them, it works, and the image stylist’s soul is really on her body. 

REMARKS: I recommend you must watch this film. It’s great!

Kainan sa Highway (2004- Vincent Films)

Is anybody remembering Kainan sa Highway? Maybe some may know about this film. It’s a sexploitation film that came out during the wave of Fly-by-Night-Studios. It’s a film worth a look especially if you’re just wasting your time.  I consider this as one the awful Pinoy films I’ve ever seen during the era of Fly-by-Night-Films. Everything is bad in this film but it is best at that area, it’s best just for your past time. It’s worthy a laugh throughout the film especially if you seen the reaction of each characters. Blank affect actors, badly delivered lines, badly written story and awful sex scenes. If you want to see some boobs, then there are plenty of that in this film but I don’t think you’ll like them. There is nothing in this film but to show skin. 

REMARKS: It’s awful!

The Invasion: Shake Rattle and Roll 14 ( 2012 - Regal Films

Chito Rono’s The Invasion: Shake Rattle and Roll 14 (a 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival Entry) is best only at its first episode Pamana. The transcending episodes Lost Command and Unwanted are one of the worst of SSR. If you want to walk out after Pamana then, its granted you may not enjoy the two episodes anyway. What makes Pamana the best of this episode is that it’s a film from the past. It reminds me of the film Halimaw, the Komiks episode of the film.  It’s a mixture of Komiks episode and the foreign film Cabin in the Woods all in the past. It also has the actors from the past on the lead in this episode. Janice de Belen, Herbert Bautista, Arlene Muhlach and Ms. Snooky Serna. The second epidose, Lost Command is boring as hell. Also the last episode, Unwanted is boring and non funny. 

REMARKS: Pamana is the best the rest of the episode is one of the worst of SSR.
